Four Tips to Make Your Dreams a Reality
It’s that time of year again. It’s the time when we look back on the year and we size it up, trying to determine if it actually measured up to all we wanted it to be or if it was a year that we’d rather forget. Many of us will make resolutions about what we will do in the upcoming year, but the truth is many of those resolutions won’t happen. Some of us will start strong, we will take off full speed ahead only to begin to forget all about the resolutions a few short months later. A new year for many, symbolizes a new start, it is a chance to “begin again”. We all have dreams, we have things we want to accomplish or we have things that we want to do differently. However, the fact is that only 8% of people keep their New Year’s resolutions. As we approach a new year, we might want to quit resolutions all together, and instead create specific goals we want to achieve.
Here are four tips to help you reach your 2019 goals:
1. Be Intentional - Many times we never achieve goals because we don’t make a plan to achieve them. They remain ideas and thoughts in our heads. Being intentional means planning how you are going to achieve your goal. Write your goal down and then list specific steps that you will take to reach them.
2. Be accountable - Share your goal with one or two people who you trust and who can hold you accountable. Sometimes we don’t share our goals not because we are afraid, but because we don’t want anyone to call us out on not doing what we said we would do. If you’re serious about what you want to do, get with someone who will hold you accountable and help keep you on track.
3. Be reflective - Making a plan is great, but what happens when it isn’t working? “If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan, not the goal.” Take time to reflect on what you are doing to determine if what you are doing is working. Use a daily or weekly journal to document your journey and use it to reflect on what’s working, what needs to go, and needs to be tweaked.
4. Be unrelenting - Over the course of the year, it’s possible, even probable that there will be obstacles that will be thrown in your path. There will distractions, detractors, and disasters, but if you really want to lose the weight, go back to school, start the business, write the book, or whatever it is you want to do, YOU CAN NOT GIVE UP. No matter what comes your way, you must be unrelenting in achieving what you have set out to achieve.
Here’s to your greatness and a phenomenal year!
